Working Principle and Optical Characteristics

* VCSEL: Based on stimulated emission, current injection causes electrons and holes to recombine in a quantum well layer, generating photons and forming a coherent laser output in a vertical resonant cavity. The laser is emitted perpendicular to the chip surface, exhibiting a narrow spectral width (single wavelength) and strong directionality, with a divergence angle as small as 20° or even lower.

* LED: Based on spontaneous emission, current passing through the semiconductor material directly releases photons, producing incoherent light. It has a wider spectral width and a larger divergence angle (approximately 180°), but poorer spot uniformity.

* Electro-optical Conversion Efficiency: VCSELs have significantly higher efficiency (up to 56%), while LEDs typically only reach around 20%. Therefore, VCSELs consume less power for the same power output.

Response Speed: VCSELs use pulse driving, achieving a response time of up to nanoseconds (2.5%), suitable for high-speed modulation; LEDs are mostly driven by constant current, resulting in a slower response. Beam Quality: VCSEL beams have good collimation, with a divergence angle less than 1° after passing through a lens, and high coupling efficiency; LED beams diverge significantly, requiring additional optical components for shaping.
