Furthermore, both its quality and quantity fluctuate drastically with landfill age and seasonal climate. The wastewater contains not only large amounts of refractory organic matter such as humic and fulvic acids but also high concentrations of heavy metals, halogenated compounds, microbial toxins, and inorganic salts that are difficult for conventional biological systems to process.
