Corrosion Control: Anodic Protection Systems

Active Corrosion Control for Aggressive Environments

Anodic protection is an electrochemical corrosion control technique designed to maintain metals in a passive state when exposed to aggressive electrolytes. Unlike cathodic protection, which is suitable for neutral or alkaline environments, anodic protection is specifically engineered for highly corrosive acidic solutions, such as concentrated sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid.

By actively forming and preserving a protective oxide film on metal surfaces, the system virtually eliminates corrosion without altering the process or the product.

Operating Principle

The technique capitalizes on the passive-active behavior exhibited by certain metals and alloys. When a metal is polarized into a specific potential range, its surface transforms from an active (corroding) state to a passive (protected) state, characterized by a thin, adherent oxide layer.

An anodic protection system continuously monitors the electrochemical potential of the equipment and applies a controlled anodic current to maintain this passive condition. This proactive approach ensures that even large vessels with complex geometries remain uniformly protected.

System Components

A complete anodic protection system consists of four primary elements working in a closed-loop control configuration:

The Cathode: One or more cathodes constructed from noble or corrosion-resistant materials (e.g., platinum, tantalum, or high-silicon cast iron) are mounted inside the vessel. These serve as the current distributors in the electrochemical circuit.
The Reference Electrode: A stable, non-polarizable reference electrode (such as mercury/mercurous sulfate for sulfuric acid) is immersed in the electrolyte. It provides a constant, reliable baseline for measuring the exact potential of the protected equipment.
The Potentiostat: The central control unit of the system. It receives the potential signal from the reference electrode, compares it to a preset "setpoint" (the ideal passive potential), and instantly adjusts the current output to the cathodes to correct any deviation.
The Protected Equipment (Anode): The metal structure to be protected—typically a storage tank, reactor, or process vessel—acts as the anode in the circuit and is maintained at the passive potential.

Economic Protection of Carbon Steel: It enables the use of cost-effective materials like carbon steel in services that would otherwise require expensive alloys.
Minimal Current Requirement: Once the passive layer is established, only a small current is needed to maintain it, resulting in low operating costs.
Product Purity: By halting ionic dissolution of the metal, the system prevents contamination of the stored chemical.
