It is primarily utilized in large-scale sulfuric acid alkylation units in petroleum refineries, as well as in drying and absorption towers within sulfuric acid plants.
This device integrates two essential functions: uniform acid distribution across the tower cross-section and advanced corrosion control via an anodic protection system.
Working Principle
Divided-Flow Distribution: The distributor features a precisely engineered network of troughs, weirs, and distribution pipes. Its primary mechanical function is to receive the incoming acid flow from the inlet nozzle and distribute it evenly over the tower packing or downstream equipment. This uniform irrigation prevents channeling, optimizes gas-liquid contact, and ensures maximum mass transfer efficiency in the tower.
Anodic Protection: Sulfuric acid at high concentrations and temperatures is extremely corrosive to standard metals. The distributor is constructed from specialized stainless steel alloys (such as 304L or 316L). To combat corrosion, the equipment is connected to an anodic protection system.
Mechanism: A rectifier applies a controlled anodic current to the distributor, shifting its electrochemical potential into a passive state. This creates a thin, protective oxide layer on the metal surface that is insoluble in the acid.
