Comparison: The force generated by this sensed variable is compared against the force of a pre-set reference spring.
Actuation: Any imbalance between these forces causes the actuator to move.
Modulation: This movement adjusts the position of a plug, poppet, or globe within the valve, changing the flow area.
Correction: The change in flow corrects the process variable, re-establishing the force balance and stabilizing the system.
This creates a continuous, self-contained feedback loop that requires no external power, making many regulating valves self-operating.
