Summary: 1.4404 is a low-carbon, molybdenum-alloyed, austenitic stainless steel (316L) chosen when you need good general corrosion resistance plus better performance in chlorides than standard 304/1.4301, and better weldability than 1.4401/316 due to its lower carbon content.
