Alloy 800H High Temperature Heat Resistant Alloy Steel Flanges
Alloy 800H (UNS N08810)
Alloy 800H (UNS N08810) is a high-temperature nickel-iron-chromium alloy, not a conventional carbon alloy steel. In piping systems, it's widely used for forged flanges, fittings, and pressure components requiring excellent strength and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures (typically 600–900 °C).
Chemical Composition
Element
Composition Range
Base Elements
Nickel (Ni)
30.0 – 35.0 %
Chromium (Cr)
19.0 – 23.0 %
Iron (Fe)
Balance (approximately 39–46 %)
Key Alloying Elements
Carbon (C)
0.05 – 0.10 %
Manganese (Mn)
≤ 1.50 %
Silicon (Si)
≤ 1.00 %
Copper (Cu)
≤ 0.75 %
Aluminum (Al)
0.15 – 0.60 %
Titanium (Ti)
0.15 – 0.60 %
Sulfur (S)
≤ 0.015 %
Phosphorus (P)
≤ 0.030 %
Note: Aluminum + Titanium combined: 0.30 – 1.20 % (these elements form gamma-prime precipitates that improve strength at high temperature).
Alloy Variants Comparison
Alloy 800: Lower carbon content (typically ≤ 0.10%, often around 0.05%), general high-temperature resistance
Alloy 800H: Controlled higher carbon (0.05–0.10%) with specific grain size requirements; optimized for creep and rupture strength at 600–900 °C
Alloy 800HT: Similar Ni-Cr-Fe base with tighter control and slightly higher (Al + Ti) for enhanced high-temperature performance
For forged flanges in high-temperature piping, 800H and 800HT are typically preferred over standard Alloy 800.
Nickel (30–35%) and Chromium (19–23%): Provide strong oxidation, carburization, and corrosion resistance in high-temperature atmospheres (reformers, heaters, petrochemical units)
Higher Carbon in 800H: Boosts creep-rupture strength, making it ideal for flanges exposed to long-term high-temperature stress
Aluminum + Titanium: Strengthen the matrix through precipitation hardening, maintaining mechanical properties at elevated temperatures
Specification Guidance
When specifying or purchasing Alloy 800H forged flanges:
Specify: "Alloy 800H (UNS N08810) forged flanges, ASTM B564, with mill test certificate (MTC) showing chemical composition and mechanical properties"
Verify heat chemistry on the MTC matches specified ranges and confirms N08810 (800H), not generic "Alloy 800"
This ensures true 800H chemistry and performance, crucial for reliable service at elevated temperatures.
