Constantan is one of the most widely used alloys due to its optimal combination of properties essential for strain gauge applications. It features the highest resistivity among comparable alloys, making it insensitive to strain levels and temperature variations. The exceptionally high resistivity enables suitable resistance levels even in very small grids, while maintaining a manageable temperature coefficient of resistance.
Constantan offers excellent fatigue life and high elongation capacity, making it highly useful for demanding applications. However, users should note that the alloy exhibits drift at temperatures around 65°C, which is critical when testing gauge stability strain at this temperature range.
