1. The Core Difference: The Fire-Resistant Core

Standard ACPs have a polyethylene (PE) core, which is highly flammable and produces toxic black smoke when burning. Fireproof ACPs replace this with non-combustible or fire-retardant materials:

• Mineral Core: The most common and effective fireproof core. Typically a mixture of mineral wool (rock wool) and other inert fillers. It is non-combustible (A2 or A1 class) and does not contribute to fire spread. It also acts as an insulator.

• Fire-Retardant (FR) Mineral-Filled Core: Often a mixture of minerals and limited fire-retardant polymers. It offers high fire resistance but may not be fully non-combustible (typically B1 or B-s1, d0 class).

• Other Inorganic Cores: Such as calcium silicate or other ceramic-based materials.

2. Fire Performance Ratings and Classifications

Panels are tested and classified under international standards (e.g., Euroclass, ASTM E84, BS 476). The most important distinctions are:

• Euroclass (Europe & International Standard):

  • A2: Limited combustibility, no contribution to fire. This is the target for true fireproof ACPs. Smoke and flaming droplets are negligible (s1, d0).

  • B-s1, d0: Combustible but very resistant to ignition. Excellent performance, often used for high-rise buildings where A2 is not mandatory.

  • (Avoid C and below for architectural cladding.)

• Non-Combustible vs. Fire-Retardant: In many building codes (especially for tall buildings), only non-combustible (A2 or A1) materials are permitted for external cladding. It's crucial to specify the correct class for your project's location and height.
