The vehicle air intake is a vital component supplying air to the engine, with its performance significantly impacting both engine efficiency and overall vehicle capability.

 

Air intake blockage
 

Causes of malfunction

  • Foreign objects such as leaves, plastic bags, grit, or cottonwood fluff are drawn in during operation, accumulating on the air intake grille or within internal passages.
  • Failure to replace the air filter regularly allows dust and contaminants to permeate the filter element, forming deposits on the intake duct walls.
  • Vehicles parked in dusty or debris-laden environments without protective intake covers permit continuous foreign object ingress.
     

Typical Symptoms

  • Engine idles unevenly with vibrations, exhibits sluggish acceleration, and delayed power response.
  • Abnormally high fuel consumption accompanied by audible ‘whooshing’ intake noises from the engine bay.
  • In severe blockages, the engine may experience starting difficulties or even stall.
     

Resolution Methods

  • Foreign object removal: Dismantle the intake grille or flexible intake hose. Utilise tweezers and a high-pressure air gun (set to low pressure mode) to clear internal debris, taking care to prevent particles from falling deeper into the intake duct.
  • Deposit cleaning: Apply specialised intake system cleaner to accumulated deposits on the intake duct inner walls. After 10-15 minutes, scrub clean with a brush and dry thoroughly using a high-pressure air gun.
  • Preventative Measures: Replace the air filter regularly (recommended every 10,000 kilometres or 6 months for standard models); install an air intake protective cover during dusty or cottonwood season; avoid prolonged parking in areas with excessive debris.
