The automotive oxygen sensor is a sensing device installed within the vehicle's exhaust system. It measures the oxygen content in the exhaust gases, feeding this information back to the engine control unit (ECU) to regulate fuel injection volume, thereby achieving closed-loop control of the engine's air-fuel ratio. It converts the oxygen concentration in the exhaust into an electrical signal, serving as one of the critical feedback components in modern automotive electronic fuel injection systems. Depending on their installation location, oxygen sensors are categorised as either upstream or downstream sensors: those positioned before the three-way catalytic converter are termed upstream sensors, monitoring exhaust oxygen levels entering the converter; those situated after the converter are known as downstream sensors, assessing the converter's conversion efficiency.

• Check exhaust system integrity: Ensure no leaks exist in the exhaust system, as these introduce excess air, altering exhaust oxygen levels and disrupting sensor operation. Regularly inspect exhaust pipes, gaskets, and catalytic converters for damage or loosening, addressing any issues promptly.
• Periodic sensor cleaning: When oxygen sensors exhibit minor contamination or signal deviation, consider using specialised oxygen sensor cleaning agents. During cleaning, remove the sensor and follow the agent's instructions for soaking or spraying, then dry thoroughly with clean compressed air. Note that cleaning only resolves minor contamination; severely aged or damaged sensors cannot be restored and must be replaced.
• Avoid abrupt acceleration and deceleration: Frequent sudden speed changes cause drastic fluctuations in the engine's air-fuel ratio, increasing the workload and wear on the oxygen sensor. Maintain a smooth driving style, minimising unnecessary rapid acceleration and deceleration to reduce signal fluctuations and extend the sensor's lifespan.
• Regularly check the fault indicator light: The vehicle's engine fault indicator (such as the OBD light) will illuminate when the oxygen sensor or related systems malfunction. Owners should develop the habit of regularly checking the dashboard. Should the warning light illuminate, promptly use a diagnostic tool to read the fault codes, determine whether the oxygen sensor is the issue, and arrange for repairs as soon as possible.
• Replace aged sensors promptly: Once an oxygen sensor reaches a certain mileage or age, its performance will significantly deteriorate and may be difficult to restore even after cleaning.
