Shock absorbers are primarily used to suppress oscillations caused by the rebound of springs after absorbing shocks and impacts from the road surface, accelerating the shock absorption of the chassis and body, and improving the ride comfort of the vehicle. Together with springs, they form the vehicle's shock absorption system, with springs responsible for mitigating impacts by converting “large single impacts” into “small multiple impacts,” while shock absorbers gradually reduce these “small multiple impacts.”

Hydraulic Shock Absorbers: Widely used, they rely on the flow of hydraulic fluid within the housing to generate damping force through friction between the fluid and the inner walls, as well as internal friction among fluid molecules, thereby achieving smooth shock absorption.

Air-filled shock absorbers: Equipped with a floating piston at the bottom of the cylinder, they feature a sealed air chamber at one end of the cylinder filled with high-pressure nitrogen. By utilizing the compressibility of gas, these shock absorbers respond more sensitively.

Variable damping shock absorbers: These can adjust damping levels flexibly by altering the size of throttle holes or other methods, depending on road conditions and driving needs, significantly enhancing adaptability.

By structure
Single-tube shock absorbers: Simple structure, eliminating the need for a valve system. A floating piston is installed at the bottom of the cylinder, forming a sealed gas chamber filled with high-pressure nitrogen. The large piston area can withstand significant instantaneous pressure, but it is susceptible to damage from external forces and has limited travel.

Double-tube shock absorbers: These have inner and outer cylinders, with the piston moving within the inner cylinder. The volume of oil in the inner cylinder changes as the piston rod extends and retracts, requiring exchange with the outer cylinder to maintain oil balance. They have four valves, lower manufacturing costs, good cushioning performance, and a longer stroke. However, they have a smaller reservoir for damping oil and poorer heat dissipation.
