How to properly plug and unplug interfaces?

Correct procedure for plugging in and unplugging connectors: (Principle: Pull the plug, not the cable.)

  • Place your fingers on the body of the plug-not on the cable.
  • When inserting: Insert the plug smoothly and vertically until you hear or feel a soft "click" (for connectors with a locking mechanism) or encounter noticeable resistance, indicating the plug is fully seated.
  • When removing: Firmly grip the body of the plug with your fingers and pull straight out, vertically and steadily, in line with the port direction. If it feels slightly tight, you may gently wiggle it side to side with small movements to ease removal-but never forcefully bend or yank the plug upward/downward or sideways.


Mistakes to absolutely avoid:

  • Pulling by the cable: This is the most damaging and common bad habit. The pulling force concentrates entirely at the junction between the plug and the cable, easily causing internal wire breakage, leading to poor contact and intermittent audio.
  • Yanking the plug at an angle: Lateral force can bend the plug and damage the delicate metal contacts inside the device's port, causing permanent looseness.
  • Plugging or unplugging while the device is unstable: If a laptop or desktop computer isn't securely positioned, the port will endure extra stress during insertion or removal.
  • Using excessive force: If the plug doesn't go in easily, first check whether it's oriented correctly-never force it in.
