A water descaler is a household device designed to protect plumbing systems and water-related appliances by preventing or reducing limescale buildup caused by hard water.Unlike traditional water softeners that remove calcium and magnesium ions through ion exchange, water descalers alter the physical properties of these minerals, inhibiting their ability to form scale deposits.
This water descaler operates based on electrochemical principles, utilizing a galvanic cell system to induce redox (oxidation-reduction) reactions. As water flows through the device, it passes over electrodes made of dissimilar metals, creating a galvanic cell.
This setup generates a weak electric current, leading to the release of electrons. These electrons interact with dissolved calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) ions, altering their crystalline structure from hard calcite to soft aragonite. The aragonite form is less likely to adhere to surfaces, thereby reducing scale formation within pipes and appliances.
