1.Product Description
This document provides full-process technical guidance for welding and joining of stainless steel seamless pipes, covering everything from base metal weldability assessment to post-weld quality inspection. Due to the absence of longitudinal welds, uniform microstructure, and stable chemical composition, seamless pipes exhibit reduced grain growth tendency in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) under welding thermal cycles, with controllable precipitation kinetics of secondary phases (e.g., σ-phase, chromium carbides). This guide covers the welding characteristics of four material categories: austenitic (304/316 series), stabilized (321/347), duplex (2205/2507), and super-austenitic (904L). Recommended parameters are provided for four common welding processes: Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG), and Submerged Arc Welding (SAW). This document may also serve as a reference basis for preparing Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Welding Procedure Qualification Records (PQR).
2. Product Applications
This welding guide is applicable to the following on-site and shop pipe joining operations:
On-site fit-up welding of new pipelines (fixed-position, rolled, and all-position welding)
Shop butt-welding of pipe spools and fillet welding of flanges/fittings
Localized replacement pipe welding and overlay cladding repair during emergency maintenance
Transition joints for dissimilar metals (e.g., austenitic-to-duplex, stainless-to-carbon steel)
Automatic TIG (hot-wire) welding for thin-wall pipes (≤3mm) and narrow-gap SAW for thick-wall pipes (≥20mm)
Applications requiring stringent weld joint toughness and corrosion resistance under cryogenic, high-temperature, or strongly corrosive services
3. Product Advantages
Low hot-cracking susceptibility: The high purity of seamless pipes (S and P ≤ 0.015%) minimizes eutectic phases at grain boundaries, providing superior resistance to hot cracking during solidification compared to ordinary welded pipes. This allows a wider heat input window, reducing on-site operational difficulty.
HAZ microstructural stability: With no prior weld thermal cycling history, the base metal has a uniform grain size (ASTM 5~7). During multi-pass welding, HAZ recrystallization and grain coarsening are approximately 30% less severe than in welded pipes of the same grade, ensuring joint impact toughness.
Excellent back-purge protection: The smooth internal surface without weld reinforcement allows precise control of argon flow rate and coverage, minimizing oxidation on the root bead with a clean appearance, eliminating the need for back-gouging.
Controlled welding deformation: Tight wall thickness tolerances (±8%~±10%) and uniform circumferential rigidity keep angular distortion and ovality changes within allowable limits, particularly favorable for automatic welding tracking systems.
Retained intergranular corrosion resistance: Stabilized grades (321/347) with uniformly distributed Ti/Nb effectively fix carbon after thermal cycles, ensuring post-weld intergranular corrosion resistance comparable to the base metal.
Dissimilar metal welding adaptability: For duplex-to-austenitic joints, the narrow chemical composition window of seamless pipes facilitates optimal weld metal phase balance (austenite/ferrite ratio), reducing intermetallic phase precipitation risks.
