1. Product Description 

 

Hastelloy pipes are nickel‑based solid‑solution strengthened corrosion‑resistant alloy tubes, registered and produced by Haynes International. The core design philosophy relies on the synergistic effect of molybdenum, chromium, and tungsten in the nickel matrix to form a stable and dense passive film while resisting alternating oxidizing and reducing attack. Compared with conventional austenitic stainless steels, Hastelloy pipes offer orders‑of‑magnitude superiority in high‑temperature acidic solutions containing halide ions. The workhorse grade C‑276 has the longest industrial history and the most extensive data base; C‑22 features increased chromium for enhanced oxidizing‑media resistance; B‑3 is micro‑alloyed specifically for reducing acids such as hydrochloric acid and exhibits better thermal stability than its predecessor B‑2. All grades are produced via duplex melting (VIM+VAR) or electroslag refining, ensuring extremely low levels of impurities (oxygen, sulfur, phosphorus) to guarantee safe long‑term operation under critical conditions.

2. Product Applications 

Hastelloy pipes are the preferred material in the following typical engineering scenarios:

  • Hydrocracking and Reforming Units in Petroleum Refining: High‑temperature, high‑pressure hydrogen service piping, reactor internal lance tubes, and quench hydrogen injection lines.

  • Ethylene and Acrylic Acid Production: Quench oil circulation pipes, acetic acid/acrylic acid mixed‑media transfer lines, and reboiler tube bundles.

  • Metal Surface Treatment and Electroplating Industry: Heating coils in chromium plating tanks, cooling serpentines in anodizing baths, and main circulation pipes for pickling solutions.

  • Geothermal Power Generation and Brine Conveyance: High‑temperature geothermal steam pipes containing hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and chlorides.

  • Semiconductor and Electronic Chemicals Manufacturing: Ultra‑pure transfer lines for hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, and other etchants, requiring minimal metal ion leaching.

  • Food Processing (non‑pharmaceutical): Heating tubes in fruit concentrate evaporators and jacket circulation pipes in citric acid fermentation tanks.

  • Specialty Chemical Synthesis: Piping systems for chlorination reactors in CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride) production.

3. Product Advantages 

  1. Extended Service Life in Extreme Environments: Typical corrosion rates in common chemical media (e.g., 20% sulfuric acid at 80°C) are below 0.1 mm/year, i.e., 1/20 to 1/50 that of 316L stainless steel, allowing maintenance intervals to be extended from six months to over five years.

  2. Wide Temperature Range Stability: Maintains ductile‑to‑brittle transition‑free behavior from cryogenic temperatures (–196°C) up to intermediate temperatures (about 550°C), suitable for both deep‑cold and moderate‑temperature oxidizing applications.

  3. Excellent Fatigue and Thermal Shock Resistance: The high‑nickel matrix provides good ductility and low thermal expansion coefficient, enabling the pipes to withstand frequent temperature fluctuations and pressure surges, thus reducing thermal fatigue crack initiation.

  4. High Reliability of Welded Joints: GTAW or SMAW processes are recommended without preheating or post‑heating; weld metal exhibits corrosion resistance comparable to the parent metal, with no susceptibility to hot cracking.

  5. Full Customization Capability: Supports non‑standard outer diameters, special cross‑sections (elliptical, rectangular), and clad pipes (Hastelloy inner lining with carbon/alloy steel outer layer) to meet specific strength‑to‑cost requirements.
