The Radial Cam is a fixed-center cam type where the cam is pin-jointed and the follower spins radially relative to the cam. This design offers compact operation with straightforward mechanical implementation.
Also known as a barrel cam, this type rotates in a cylindrical circle about its own axis. The spring-coupled follower makes contact in two configurations:
Primarily used in computer applications, spiral cams feature spiral grooves with teeth that engage a pin gear follower. Follower movement is determined by the radial distance of grooves from the cam's axis.
Available in concave and convex surface varieties, globoidal cams feature circumferential incisions on the perimeter to enable follower rotation. While operation is similar for both surfaces, applications differ. Ideal for medium-speed engines requiring large oscillation angles.
Comprising two properly aligned discs that contact the follower, conjugate cams operate silently with reduced wear and tear rates. This makes them superior for high-speed and high-dynamic-load applications.
Featuring an asymmetrical design, heart-shaped cams are primarily used to maintain shafts in predetermined positions through roller-applied pressure.
Consisting of a groove or contour plate with an oscillating follower, translating cams specify follower movement through their groove or contour design.
Used in mechanical timekeeping clocking-in clocks, snail drop cams enable precise timing functions. For example, daylight advance mechanisms can initiate at exactly midnight, guiding followers through spiral paths for over 24 hours before sudden cut-off and descent to begin day progress.
