Carbon Steel Welded Round Pipe ASTM A53 BS 1387 EN 10217 ERW LSAW SSAW Steel

1. Product Overview

This product range covers carbon steel welded round pipes manufactured from prime hot-rolled strip and plate by Electric Resistance Welding (ERW), Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welding (LSAW) and Spiral Submerged Arc Welding (SSAW). Pipes are supplied in black (uncoated) condition as standard, with oiled, painted or hot-dip galvanized protection available on request.

Production strictly follows ASTM A53, BS 1387 and EN 10217, the three mainstream international standards for welded pipe. Wall thickness is normally supplied to Sch40 (STD) and Sch80 (XS) series, with plain ends (PE) or beveled ends (BE) for welding, threading or grooved connections. Typical applications include water supply and drainage, general fluid conveyance, building structures, foundation piling and fire-protection pipe networks.

3. Mechanical Properties

Mechanical properties are tested batch by batch in accordance with the applicable standard. The table below lists typical values for common grades; actual delivered values are confirmed by the Material Test Certificate (MTC).

• EN 10217-1 yield strength is the upper yield strength ReH for wall thickness up to 16 mm; values are reduced per the standard for thicker walls
• EN 10217-1 TR2 quality requires Charpy V-notch impact testing at 0 °C: minimum average absorbed energy 40 J longitudinal / 28 J transverse; testing at -10 °C (≥ 27 J) is available by agreement
• ASTM A53 elongation is calculated per ASTM A370 based on specimen cross-section; BS 1387 requires a minimum elongation of 20%

4. Corrosion Resistance

The mill scale on black carbon steel pipe offers little protection, and the pipe corrodes readily in humid or aggressive environments. Depending on the service environment, several surface protection options are available to isolate corrosive media, extend service life and reduce whole-life-cycle maintenance costs.

For buried and marine service, a coating-plus-cathodic-protection combination is recommended; fire-protection piping is commonly protected with red-lead primer or hot-dip galvanizing; exposed indoor lines should be inspected and touched up periodically.

5. Technical Information

5.1 Manufacturing Process

• ERW: hot-rolled strip → edge milling → forming → high-frequency resistance welding → weld heat treatment → sizing → NDT; OD 21.3 - 660 mm, efficient and economical
• LSAW: plate → JCOE / UOE forming → double-sided submerged arc welding (inside and outside) → mechanical expansion; heavy wall, high weld quality, suited to pressure service and piling
• SSAW: helical strip forming → double-sided submerged arc welding; economical and flexible for large diameters, suited to low-pressure conveyance and piling

For ASTM A53 Type E, the ERW weld is heat-treated after welding at not less than 540 °C (1000 °F) to eliminate untempered martensite. EN 10217-1 TR2 quality requires high-frequency welding at a minimum frequency of 100 kHz, with normalized delivery conditions available.

5.2 Chemical Composition

Low carbon, phosphorus and sulphur levels keep the carbon equivalent low, providing good weldability. No special preheating is normally required under standard welding conditions, except for heavy-wall pipe or low ambient temperatures.

5.3 Inspection and Testing

• Hydrostatic test on every pipe, holding time no less than 5 seconds; test pressure calculated per standard formulas and recorded
• 100% ultrasonic (UT) or eddy current (ET) NDT of the weld seam to rule out lack of fusion, cracks and other defects
• Flattening, bend and drift-expanding tests per the applicable standard; transverse weld tensile tests for ERW pipe of 219 mm OD and above
• Dimensional and visual inspection on every pipe to guarantee surface quality and geometric accuracy

6. Quality Assurance

6.1 Quality Management System

Production is operated under an ISO 9001 quality management system, with a three-stage inspection regime from incoming material through in-process control to finished product. Quality control points are set at all critical operations to ensure stable, consistent quality.

6.2 Inspection and Documentation

• Material Test Certificate (MTC per EN 10204 3.1) supplied with each shipment; full heat-number traceability
• Inspection covers chemical composition, mechanical properties, technological tests, hydrostatic test, NDT, dimensions and appearance
• Third-party inspection by SGS, BV, Lloyd's and similar bodies accepted; reports delivered with the cargo

6.3 Marking and Packing

• Pipe marking: standard, grade, heat number, size and maker's mark, with color coding by grade
• Export-grade packing: steel strapping, end caps, moisture-proof wrapping; wooden cases or frames where required
• Loading and storage handled to standard practice to prevent mechanical damage and rust in transit

6.4 Supply and Service Commitments

• Regular sizes held in stock; typical lead time for customized sizes 15 - 30 days
• Technical support for grade selection, wall-thickness calculation and connection design; prompt quality-claim response
