Magnesium-zinc-zirconium alloy (magnesium-zinc-zirconium alloy) is a high-strength ternary magnesium alloy.
Zinc plays a role of solid solution strengthening and forms a strengthening phase. Zirconium can refine the structure, slow down the diffusion rate of the alloy, and prevent the growth of crystal grains. It has good casting performance, hot workability and corrosion resistance, but the production process is more complicated and the segregation tendency is greater. It can be strengthened by heat treatment, and it can be used in quenching and aging state. The commonly used grades for casting magnesium-zinc-zirconium alloys are ZM1 and ZM2. The commonly used grade of wrought magnesium forging alloy is MB5. ZM1 has high strength and low wall thickness sensitivity. It is mainly used for high-strength, impact-loaded parts in the aviation industry, such as aircraft hubs, rims, brackets, etc. ZM2 has good castability and is mainly used for parts with higher working temperature in the aviation industry, such as engine mounts and motor housings. MB5 is used for extruded products and die forgings with high strength and ductility.
