Edge Retention
The rate at which a cutting edge deteriorates determines everything downstream: surface integrity, dimensional consistency, machine utilization, and per-part cost. Polycrystalline diamond addresses this at the material level. With hardness approaching 8,000 HV — roughly four times that of tungsten carbide — the PCD edge does not experience gradual abrasive rounding in non-ferrous applications at any rate that matters within a production shift.
Thermal Conductivity as a Wear-Prevention Mechanism
Cutting generates friction. Friction generates heat. Heat softens tool material. Softened material wears faster. This feedback loop is the dominant failure mode for carbide tooling in continuous-cut operations.
Diamond's
thermal conductivity disrupts the loop. Heat generated at the shear plane moves into the chip body rather than accumulating in the tool substrate. The edge stays below its softening threshold. Wear remains governed by abrasion rather than thermal degradation — and PCD is fundamentally resistant to abrasion.
Aluminum Adhesion — Solved at the Molecular Level
Built-up edge formation on carbide is a diffusion-welding phenomenon. Under cutting temperature and pressure, aluminum atoms bond to the cobalt binder phase in tungsten carbide. The deposit grows, alters the effective cutting geometry, and eventually detaches — carrying carbide grains with it.
PCD has no metallic binder and no chemical pathway for aluminum diffusion bonding. The chip separates cleanly at the shear plane. There is no
built-up edge to manage, no periodic insert rotation to clear deposits, and no tool material loss from galling.
Geometric Stability Across the Production Window
When edge geometry is stable, cutting forces are stable. When cutting forces are stable, tool deflection is stable. When deflection is stable, part dimensions are stable. This chain of dependencies begins and ends with edge retention.
Custom Specification as Standard Practice
Standard tool geometries solve standard problems. The engineering process for non-standard applications follows a different sequence: material spec → part geometry → cutting strategy → tool design. Diameter, reach, nose radius, rake angle, clearance, and chip control features are derived from application requirements.
