Palton 8mm 12mm Brazed Solid‑PCD Diamond Drill Bit, High‑Wear‑Resistant CNC Drilling Tool for Graphite, Carbon Fiber and Silicon Carbide Machining
No offset adjustments. No scrap from drifting tolerances.
The same principle holds across copper, brass, magnesium, CFRP, GFRP, engineering plastics, and graphite. Diamond cuts without loading, without smearing, and without the progressive edge degradation that defines carbide tool life in non-ferrous materials.
▎How a PCD Drill Is Constructed
Unlike coated carbide tools, a PCD drill does not rely on a thin surface layer that wears through over time. The polycrystalline diamond at the cutting edge is a solid, sintered structure — the tool surface itself, not a film deposited on top of a different substrate. There is no coating to wear away because there is no distinction between "surface" and "body" at the cutting zone.
This construction has direct consequences for hole quality over long
production runs. The cutting edge geometry remains stable from the first hole to the last. Diameter holds. Exit quality holds. Position holds.
▎Thermal Management — The Hidden Advantage
Drilling is a confined operation. The tool is surrounded by workpiece material with limited clearance for heat escape. Heat that cannot dissipate accumulates in the tool body, causing thermal expansion that pushes dimensions out of tolerance.
Diamond's thermal conductivity is approximately five times that of carbide. Heat entering the cutting zone is conducted away through the diamond and into the tool body faster than it builds up at the edge. The result is a cooler cutting zone, stable dimensions throughout the cycle, and no thermal drift eating into tight bore tolerances. For deep-hole applications where

heat buildup is the primary limiting factor, this differential alone can justify the switch.
▎CFRP Drilling — No Delamination
Carbon fiber presents a different failure mechanism than aluminum. A carbide drill that has lost its sharp edge does not load up — it begins displacing fibers laterally rather than shearing them cleanly at the point of contact. The exit ply delaminates around the hole, producing a raised crater that is a reject condition in aerospace, automotive, and high-end composite fabrication.
A PCD cutting edge severs each fiber on contact. The exit ply remains intact. Hole after hole. For structural CFRP assembly work — fuselage fastener holes, chassis mounting points, bonded-joint preparation — this is production-critical.
▎Material Compatibility
Aluminum (all grades)
Clean exit, no BUE, stable diameter
Copper & brass No smearing, low friction
CFRP / GFRP Fiber severance without delamination
Engineering plastics No melting, no resin loading
Graphite Edge resists carbon abrasion
Magnesium Low friction, cool cutting
Not suitable for: Steel, cast iron, stainless steel, and other ferrous metals. Diamond reacts chemically with iron at cutting temperature — the carbon dissolves into the workpiece and edge destruction is rapid.
A unit-for-unit price comparison between PCD and carbide misses the point. The cost of a carbide drill is not the tool price — it is the tool price plus downtime for changes, plus operator labor for offset adjustments, plus scrap from out-of-tolerance holes, plus rework, plus inventory churn.
A PCD drill that runs an entire shift without a tool change eliminates every downstream cost in that chain. Procurement should be measured in cost-per-hole, not cost-per-tool. On that metric, PCD consistently outperforms carbide in non-ferrous and composite production.
Custom geometries: Diameter, point angle, flute length, shank configuration — built to print
Lead time: Stock sizes ship in working days; custom in 10–18 working days
Minimum order: Trial quantities accommodated
