The PCD Edge — A Different Kind of Tooling Conversation
Most tooling discussions start with a catalog number. PCD discussions start with a material problem.
"My inserts don't last a full shift in aluminum."
That's an edge material problem, not a setup problem. Polycrystalline diamond has zero chemical affinity for aluminum — no cold welding, no built-up edge, no galling. The chip slides across the cutting face instead of sticking to it. In silicon-heavy casting alloys (A390, A356), where silicon particles act as abrasive cutting media against conventional carbide, PCD is simply harder than the abrasive. The insert doesn't know it's supposed to be wearing out.
"The CFRP panels delaminate when I drill them."
Delamination isn't a cutting problem — it's a dullness problem.
As the cutting edge rounds over, it pushes fibers instead of severing them. PCD resists that rounding. The sharp edge lasts through the production run, cutting carbon and glass fibers cleanly rather than displacing them into the laminate structure. Hole exit quality — the classic failure point in composite drilling — stays intact.
"Bore position shifts over the course of a production batch."
Tool wear changes every cutting parameter. More feed force required. Slightly more deflection. Subtle shift in true position. The operator compensates, but the first ten parts and the last ten parts don't truly match. PCD arrests this degradation cycle. The cutting geometry that drills or bores the morning's first hole is still producing the afternoon's last one within the same dimensional envelope.
