        • TECHNICAL BRIEF: PCD Straight Router Bit

          Purpose

          Single- and dual-flute polycrystalline diamond straight router bits for CNC nesting, grooving, and edge-finishing operations on panel materials, non-ferrous metals, fiber composites, and engineering plastics. Designed to replace carbide tooling where edge wear drives excessive spindle downtime.

          The Wear Problem, Quantified

          A carbide straight bit cutting MDF at standard production parameters loses measurable edge sharpness within 30–90 linear meters of cutting, depending on panel density and resin content. By 200 meters, groove bottom quality has degraded to the point where rework or secondary sanding is required by most quality standards. The operator responds by indexing or replacing the tool — typically 3–8 times

          per shift on high-output nesting lines.

          Each tool change consumes 5–8 minutes of non-productive spindle time (deceleration, removal, installation, touch-off, first-part check). Across three shifts producing 7,000–12,000 cabinet parts daily, accumulated tool-change downtime represents 5–8% of available production capacity.

          A PCD straight bit of equivalent geometry operating on the same production line reaches 2,000–5,000 linear meters before edge degradation begins to affect surface quality, and 8,000–15,000+ linear meters before geometry change approaches dimensional limits. Tool changes become scheduled preventive events, not reactive interruptions.

          Material Structure

          Substrate: K10–K20 grade tungsten carbide (6% cobalt), HIP-sintered to full density. Hardness 91.5–92.0 HRA.

          Transverse rupture strength ≥ 3,500 MPa. Shank tolerance h6, concentricity ≤ 3 μm.

          Cutting element: HPHT polycrystalline diamond blank, 10–25 μm average grain size (fine grade), diamond volume fraction ≥ 90%. Hardness 8,000–10,000 HV. Thermal conductivity 500–560 W/m·K. Coefficient of friction vs. aluminum: 0.05–0.10 (dry).

          Bond interface: Vacuum furnace brazed, active filler metal system, process temperature 680–720°C, chamber pressure ≤ 10⁻³ Pa. Bond shear strength ≥ 200 MPa. Interface free of porosity and intermetallic embrittlement phases.

          Edge preparation: Pulsed fiber laser, 1,064 nm wavelength, 0.01 mm spot diameter, multi-pass contour ablation. Edge radius controllable from sharp (≤ 5 μm) to honed (10–25 μm) per application requirement. No grinding-induced subsurface

          Application-By-Application Guidance

          Cabinet Nesting (MDF/Melamine/Plywood)

          Primary operation: through-cutting and dado grooving nested cabinet parts on vacuum-table CNC routers. Key requirement: chip-free edges on decorative surface layers. 1-flute recommended

          for finish-critical edges on face-frame panels. 2-flute recommended for internal structural grooves where post-processing is standard. PCD eliminates melamine micro-peeling at the cut boundary for the full tool life window.

          Aluminum Panel and Plate Milling

          Applicable to 1xxx through 7xxx series aluminum in sheet, plate, and extrusion form. PCD edge does not accumulate aluminum deposit (built-up edge absent due to chemical inertness of diamond to aluminum). Dry or MQL cutting is standard. Flood coolant optional but not required. Surface finish Ra achievable: 0.4–0.8 μm on 6061-T6 at production feed rates.

          Composite Panel Trimming

          CFRP and GFRP laminates cut without fiber pull-out at entry or delamination at exit. Diamond edge severs individual fibers rather than displacing them into

          the matrix. Tool life in continuous glass-fiber-reinforced panel cutting exceeds carbide by factor of 30–80× depending on glass content and fiber orientation.

          Acrylic and Polycarbonate Machining

          Cast and extruded acrylic, PETG, and polycarbonate sheet cut without localized melting at the groove interface. Edge remains optically clear with no stress whitening. Suitable for display, signage, and light-guide panel manufacturing where edge clarity is a cosmetic requirement.

          Thermal Behavior — The Data

          At 18,000 RPM and 0.15 mm/tooth feed cutting 18 mm MDF:

          • Steady-state PCD edge temperature: 120–180°C (well below diamond graphitization threshold of ~700°C in air)
