Palton 4‑12mm Sintered Diamond Face Milling Cutter Grinding Head, Precision CNC Cutter for Metal, Ceramics, Engineering Plastic Milling Work
This cycle repeats until the entire head is consumed. The tool doesn't go dull mid-job because the tool doesn't have a "surface" to wear through — it has a volume to work through.
Q: "Walk me through the manufacturing. What am I actually paying for?"
A: Five stages, each with a specific purpose:
Diamond grading — The raw abrasive gets sorted by particle size and quality. Skip this step and your tool face has a mix of large and small grains fighting for engagement with the stone. The result is uneven cutting action that shows up on the workpiece surface. Graded grit means uniformity from edge to center.
Mix formulation — The graded diamond goes into a precise blend with metal bond powder. This is where stone type enters the equation. Granite demands a harder bond matrix that erodes slowly,
matching the abrasive quartz content. Marble calls for a softer bond that exposes fresh diamond faster, since the stone itself provides less abrasive wear. There is no universal ratio. Every stone has an optimal formulation.
Cold press molding — The powder blend is compacted in precision tooling at extreme pressure. The objective is uniform density throughout the green compact. Why this matters: any density variation in the pressed body becomes a wear-rate variation in the finished tool. A low-density zone erodes faster, creating a depression in the tool face, concentrating cutting force into a smaller area, accelerating failure. Uniform pressing = uniform wear = predictable tool life.
Vacuum sintering — The pressed compact enters a furnace from which all atmosphere has been evacuated. Here's

what happens if you sinter in normal atmosphere: oxygen molecules get trapped as microscopic bubbles inside the solidifying bond. Each bubble is a void — a place where a diamond particle isn't making full contact with the surrounding metal. Under cutting load, those weakly anchored diamonds release before contributing their full working life. Vacuum sintering removes the oxygen before the bond sets, producing a near-theoretical-density structure where every diamond particle is completely gripped. No premature release. Every grain works until it wears.
Finish grinding — The sintered head receives its final profile, concentricity, and edge geometry through precision grinding. On a CNC spindle, a tool with runout concentrates all cutting action on one high spot. That spot wears rapidly, producing
uneven surface quality and shortening effective tool life. Precision-ground concentricity distributes wear evenly across the tool face.
The carbide shank is the foundation — high stiffness to resist deflection under cutting load, and inherent vibration dampening to keep the tool tracking true across the stone surface.
Q: "How do I know the tool is working correctly on my machine?"
A: Three things to watch at the start of every job:
Touch-off behavior. A properly manufactured sintered diamond tool bites immediately on contact with the stone. You should see zero hesitation mark, zero lateral drift, zero dwell scar from the tool spinning against the surface before penetration. Any of those symptoms at touch-off — check your tool runout first, your collet condition second.
Feed rate stability.
Set your cutting speed once. The self-sharpening mechanism keeps the exposed diamond surface area constant through the entire engraving cycle, so feed rate doesn't need mid-job adjustment. With electroplated tools, you develop a habit of creeping the feed down as the edge degrades. With sintered tools, that habit is unnecessary — and counterproductive, since slowing down reduces the abrasive action the bond needs for controlled erosion.
Surface quality. The tool should leave a surface clean enough that intermediate sanding or texturing passes can be consolidated or skipped. This varies by stone type and your quality standards, but as a baseline: if you're seeing consistent surface quality from first letter to last without feed adjustments, the tool is doing its job.
Q: "What about different
stones? One tool works for all?"
A: The self-sharpening principle applies across all stone types, but bond formulation needs to match the material:
Granite — High quartz content creates aggressive abrasive wear. Bond is formulated harder to erode at a controlled rate matching the diamond wear. No glazing on the tool face even in extended runs.
Marble — Softer stone, less abrasive action on the tool. Bond is formulated softer to expose fresh diamond at the right pace. Critical advantage: no heat discoloration on white marble — a dealbreaker for memorial and signage work where surface appearance is the product.
Bluestone — Dense fine-grained basalt. This material can load up a poorly matched bond, filling the spaces between diamond particles with stone dust and stopping cutting action. The

right formulation keeps the bond face open and breathing.
Sandstone — The challenge here isn't hardness, it's grain retention. A dull or incorrectly bonded tool pulls silica grains out of the softer matrix, leaving a pitted surface. Sintered diamond cuts the grains cleanly in place — no pullout.
Engineered Quartz — This is electroplated tooling's worst nightmare. High-hardness aggregate in a resin binder loads standard tool faces almost immediately. Bond hardness needs specific tuning to match.
Limestone — Aggressive material removal without clogging from soft fines. Open bond structure allows the dust to clear, keeping fresh diamond exposed.
Q: "What can I actually make with these?"
A: The application range covers the full CNC stone workflow:
Monument and memorial lettering, including
fine-serif fonts and portrait engraving
Architectural bas-relief panels and decorative facade elements
Dimensional signage and wayfinding systems for commercial and public spaces
Three-dimensional sculptural roughing and detail finishing
Countertop edge profiles and decorative line cutting
Floor medallions and inlay borders
Surface texturing, cross-hatching, and artistic patterning
Q: "How do I order?"
A: Standard engraving diameters and common profiles ship from stock. Everything else — grit size, bond hardness, tip geometry, shank dimensions — is built to your stone type, your machine, and your application. Just tell us what you're cutting and what spindle you're running.
