Sodium sulfate is a common byproduct and chemical raw material generated across diverse sectors, including textile dyeing, printing, paper manufacturing, battery recycling, and chemical synthesis. Managing high-salinity wastewater containing sodium sulfate presents significant environmental and economic challenges.
A sodium sulfate evaporation unit is a specialized thermal separation system engineered to concentrate, crystallize, and recover sodium sulfate from complex industrial liquid streams. By converting hazardous or high-salt effluents into clean distillate and high-purity solid salt, these units enable closed-loop water reuse and zero liquid discharge (ZLD) compliance.
Sodium sulfate evaporation units rely on thermal phase change to separate water from dissolved salts. Depending on energy availability and economic targets, systems typically utilize Mechanical Vapor Recompression (MVR) or Multiple Effect Distillation (MED) configurations.
Sodium sulfate exhibits a unique solubility curve. Its solubility increases rapidly with temperature up to approximately 32.4°C, after which it remains relatively constant or decreases slightly. Evaporation systems leverage this thermodynamic property by operating under precisely controlled temperature and pressure conditions:
Concentration Phase: The feed solution is heated to boil off water under vacuum or atmospheric pressure, increasing the solute concentration up to the saturation point.
Crystallization Phase: As supersaturation is achieved, sodium sulfate precipitates out of the solution as solid crystals (often as mirabilite or anhydrous sodium sulfate depending on operating temperatures), which are then separated via centrifuges or solid-bowl decanters.
Selecting the appropriate evaporation technology depends on scale, energy costs, and effluent composition.
| Parameter / Feature | MVR Evaporation Unit | Multiple-Effect (MED) Unit | Forced Circulation Crystallizer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary Energy Source | Electrical Power (compressor) | Steam | Steam / Thermal Fluid |
| Energy Efficiency | Extremely High (low specific energy consumption) | Moderate to High (scales with number of effects) | Moderate |
| Capital Investment | Higher initial investment | Moderate | Moderate to High |
| Operational Complexity | Advanced automation required | Standard automation | Standard automation |
| Best Suited For | Large-scale continuous operation with low electricity costs | Facilities with abundant waste steam | High-scaling, high-viscosity crystal slurries |
Industries generating high-TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) wastewater containing high levels of sodium sulfate benefit the most. Key sectors include textile dyeing and finishing, chemical manufacturing, hydrometallurgy, lithium extraction, and detergent production.
Mechanical Vapor Recompression (MVR) recycles secondary steam generated during the evaporation process. By compressing the vapor using a high-efficiency blower or compressor, its temperature and latent heat are elevated, allowing it to serve as the primary heating medium. This eliminates the need for continuous external fresh steam supply, drastically cutting energy consumption.
Scaling is mitigated through continuous forced circulation, maintaining high fluid velocities across heat transfer surfaces, and utilizing specialized anti-scaling pretreatment or seeding techniques. Additionally, scraped-surface heat exchangers or designated settling legs are often integrated to continuously purge crystal slurry and prevent precipitate buildup.
