What is a CIP Tank?

A CIP (Clean-In-Place) tank is an industrial storage and preparation vessel used as the heart of an automated cleaning system. These tanks are designed to hold, heat, and precisely mix cleaning chemicals (such as caustic soda or nitric acid) and purified water.

The primary purpose of a CIP system is to thoroughly clean the interior surfaces of pipes, vessels, heat exchangers, and process equipment without requiring operators to physically disassemble the plant. CIP tanks are strictly utilized in industries where absolute hygiene is non-negotiable, primarily food and beverage, dairy, brewing, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

1. Anatomy of a CIP System

A true CIP process rarely relies on a single tank. Industrial systems are built as "skids" containing multiple CIP tanks to handle different steps of the wash cycle. A typical 3-tank CIP skid includes:

  • The Caustic Tank: Holds the alkaline solution (usually 1% to 2% Sodium Hydroxide) heated to 70°C - 85°C. Caustic breaks down organic soils, fats, and proteins.

  • The Acid Tank: Holds a mild acidic solution (like Nitric or Phosphoric acid) used at lower temperatures to remove mineral scale (like milk stone or calcium deposits) and to neutralize the pH after a caustic wash.

  • The Recovery/Water Tank: Holds the final rinse water. To save utility costs, many plants use the final rinse water from the previous cycle as the pre-rinse water for the next cycle.

2. The Science of Cleaning: The T.A.C.T. Principle

A CIP tank does not just hold liquid; it is engineered to deliver the four foundational pillars of industrial hygiene, known as the TACT principle. If any one of these pillars is reduced, another must be increased to achieve the same level of cleanliness.

  1. Time: The duration the cleaning fluid is in contact with the equipment.

  2. Action (Mechanical): The physical scrubbing force of the fluid. In tanks, this is achieved using rotary spray balls. In pipes, this is achieved by pumping the fluid fast enough to create turbulent flow.

  3. Chemical: The concentration of the cleaning agents.

  4. Temperature: The thermal energy applied to the fluid. Higher temperatures drastically reduce the time and chemicals required.

Calculating "Action" (Turbulent Flow)

For a CIP system to effectively clean a pipe, the fluid cannot just slide through smoothly (laminar flow); it must churn and scrub the pipe walls (turbulent flow). Engineers guarantee this by calculating the Reynolds Number (Re) and ensuring it is strictly greater than 4,000.



To achieve necessary turbulence, the industry standard is to design CIP pumps to deliver a fluid velocity of at least 1.5 m/s through the largest pipe in the circuit.

3. The Thermodynamics: Heating the CIP Tank

Heating a large volume of caustic solution from ambient temperature to 80°C requires a massive amount of thermal energy. CIP tanks are usually equipped with internal steam coils or external heat exchangers. The thermal power required ($Q$) is calculated using the specific heat capacity formula:

4. Single vs. Multi-Tank CIP Systems

When designing a plant, engineers must balance capital costs against operational efficiency and chemical waste.

What is a spray ball?

A spray ball is a stainless steel sphere with precisely drilled holes, mounted at the top of a processing vessel. The CIP pump forces cleaning solution into the ball, spraying it in a 360-degree pattern to cascade down the tank walls, providing the "Action" part of the TACT principle.

Why is caustic soda the primary chemical in CIP tanks?

Caustic soda (Sodium Hydroxide) is incredibly effective at saponifying fats and dissolving proteins. Because organic matter is the primary contaminant in food and beverage systems, a hot caustic wash is the most efficient way to break down these soils so they can be flushed away.

Can a CIP system clean dead legs?

No. A "dead leg" is a section of piping (like an unused T-junction or a capped off pipe) where fluid cannot flow through continuously. Because CIP relies entirely on turbulent flow velocity, dead legs do not get the required mechanical scrubbing and will harbor bacteria. Good sanitary engineering strictly forbids the design of dead legs in a process line.
