Calcium chloride pellets, particularly those refined from natural brine, are a versatile, high-performance bulk chemical used in civil engineering and environmental services for road maintenance, soil stabilization, and winter deicing. In "dust control" applications on unpaved roads (e.g., mining haul roads, construction access roads, dirt roads), calcium chloride pellets excel. Their mechanism of action is based on high hygroscopicity: they absorb moisture from the air, deliquescing to form a brine solution. This solution has a low vapor pressure, helping to keep the surface material of the road damp for extended periods. Concurrently, the calcium ions have a flocculating and binding effect on soil particles, especially clay particles, helping to agglomerate fine dust particles together. This forms a hard, stable surface crust resistant to being dislodged by vehicle tires or wind, thereby reducing airborne inhalable particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5) concentrations by up to 80% or more. This significantly improves air quality in work environments and protects the surrounding ecosystem and personnel health. In soil stabilization, it modifies the properties of clay minerals through ion exchange, reducing their tendency to swell upon water contact, thereby enhancing the subgrade's bearing capacity (CBR value) and overall stability. As a "winter ice melt agent," calcium chloride pellets offer distinct advantages over traditional sodium chloride (rock salt). They have a stronger freezing-point depression effect, enabling rapid melting of ice and snow at very low temperatures (down to -29°C or lower). More importantly, their dissolution process is exothermic, generating heat that accelerates the melting process and provides immediate anti-skid properties, making them particularly suitable for emergency treatment of critical areas like bridges, ramps, and airport runways. Although the unit cost might be slightly higher, they are used more sparingly, are more efficient, are less corrosive to concrete and metals, and cause less damage to vegetation compared to sodium chloride, offering better overall environmental benefits.
