In oil drilling fluids, liquid calcium chloride is a key component for formulating "calcium-based drilling mud" systems. By adjusting its dosage, the density and the inhibitory chemical phase of the drilling fluid can be precisely controlled. The high concentration of calcium ions effectively inhibits the hydration, swelling, and dispersion of shale and clay minerals in the wellbore, preventing wellbore instability, narrowing, or collapse. This is crucial for drilling through complex formations, especially those rich in active clays.
In the construction industry, liquid calcium chloride is a highly effective "concrete accelerator and set-accelerator." For cold-weather concreting or situations requiring rapid formwork removal and early load-bearing capacity (e.g., precast elements, urgent road repairs), adding it to the concrete mix water significantly accelerates the hydration reaction of cement minerals (particularly C3A and C3S). This shortens the setting time and markedly increases the early-age strength (1-day and 3-day strength can improve by 30% to 100% or more). However, attention must be paid to the potential risk of steel reinforcement corrosion, requiring adherence to strict standards and dosage limits.
