When chlorine-containing disinfectants dissolve in water, they generate hypochlorous acid, which acts on bacterial proteins. Hypochlorous acid can interact with cell walls and, due to its small molecular size and lack of charge, penetrate cell interiors to destroy bacterial phosphodiesterase through oxidation. This process hinders sugar metabolism and ultimately causes bacterial cell death.
