Sodium hypochlorite solution is a light yellow transparent liquid and a strong oxidizing agent, classified as a highly efficient chlorine-containing disinfectant. When chlorine-containing disinfectants dissolve in water, they generate hypochlorous acid, which acts on bacterial proteins. Hypochlorous acid can interact with cell walls and, due to its small molecular size and lack of charge, penetrate cell interiors to destroy bacterial phosphodiesterase through oxidation. This process hinders sugar metabolism and ultimately causes bacterial cell death.
The sterilization capability improves with higher sodium hypochlorite solution concentrations and longer contact times, resulting in enhanced disinfection effectiveness. Sodium hypochlorite dissociates in water to produce hypochlorous acid.
