It is easily soluble in water, and its aqueous solution is alkaline. A 1% aqueous solution has a pH of 8.0, while a 0.1 mol/L solution has a pH of 7.8. DAP is insoluble in alcohol and dimethyl ketone.

When exposed to air, it gradually loses about 8% of its ammonia and converts into ammonium dihydrogen phosphate. It has the ability to react with ammonia water to produce triammonium phosphate.
