Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), also known as sodium lauryl sulfate and industrially as K12, is an anionic surfactant belonging to the sulfate ester salt family. This versatile compound appears as white or pale yellow powder with a characteristic odor and lubricating feel.
Sodium lauryl sulfate is readily soluble in water, forming transparent solutions, and is slightly soluble in alcohol while insoluble in chloroform and ether. The compound exhibits excellent emulsifying, foaming, water-soluble, biodegradable, alkali-resistant, and hard-water-resistant properties. It maintains stability in aqueous solutions across a wide pH range and demonstrates over 90% biodegradability.
