Carboxymethyl Cellulose Sodium Salt 

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is a tackifier. At room temperature, it is a non-toxic and odorless white flocculent powder with stable performance. It is highly soluble in water, and its aqueous solution is a neutral or alkaline transparent viscous liquid. It can dissolve in other water-soluble adhesives and resins, but is insoluble in organic solvents such as ethanol. Carboxymethyl cellulose is the carboxymethyl group substitution product of cellulose. Depending on its molecular weight or degree of substitution, it can be a completely soluble or insoluble polymer. The latter can be used as a weak acid type cation exchanger to separate neutral or basic proteins, etc.

 

The thickening principle of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na) is mainly based on the hydration of its polymer chains and intermolecular interactions. The specific mechanisms are as follows: 

1. The molecular structure characteristics of hydrophilic group: CMC - contains a lot of carboxymethyl Na molecular chain (- CH ₂ COO ⁻) and hydroxyl (OH), the hydrophilic group can form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, the polymer chain fully hydrated. Charged characteristics: carboxylic acid ions (- COO ⁻) ionization in the water, make the negatively charged molecular chain, through electrostatic repulsion to make molecular chain extension, increase the contact area with water.

 

2. After hydration CMC Na - soluble in water, polar groups form hydration layer adsorbed water molecules, molecular chain expansion. This hydration significantly increases the volume of the solution, restricts the free movement of water molecules, and thereby enhances the viscosity of the system.

 

3. The molecular chain entanglement with the increase of concentration, long chain structure of the CMC - Na intertwine to form the three-dimensional network structure. This entanglement hinders the flow of the liquid and is macroscopically manifested as an increase in viscosity. The higher the concentration, the denser the entanglement and the more significant the thickening effect.

 

4. Stability and electrostatic repulsion between negatively charged molecular chain electrostatic repulsion to prevent its gathered themselves together, and to keep stretching, further promote hydration and tangles. This charge stability enables CMC-Na to maintain its thickening effect over a wide pH range, especially under alkaline conditions.

 

5. Rheological properties CMC - usually pseudoplastic Na solution (shear thinned), which stand for high viscosity (molecular chain extended), under the shear viscosity reducing (chain orientation). This feature is suitable for scenarios that require application or pumping.

 

6. Factors affecting degree of substitution (DS) : the higher the DS, water-soluble and thickening ability stronger (usually the DS = 0.6 to 1.0 apply). High molecular weight, molecular weight of CMC - Na chain is longer, entanglement is more significant, higher viscosity. PH and salt: acidic conditions (pH < 3) may lead to precipitation; High-valent metal ions (such as Ca²⁺) neutralize charges and reduce the thickening effect.
