For example, an M4-P0.7 nut can only connect with M4-P0.7 bolts (where M4 indicates a ~4mm inner diameter and 0.7mm thread pitch). Similarly, a 1/4-20 nut requires a 1/4-20 screw (0.25" inner diameter with 20 threads per inch).
