Hexagonal nuts are used in conjunction with screws and bolts to connect and fasten machine parts. The most widely used type is the 1 type six nuts, with C nuts used for applications where surface roughness and precision requirements are not critical, while A and B nuts are used for more polished surfaces and higher precision requirements.
Type 2 hexagonal nuts have greater thickness (M) and are often used in applications requiring frequent assembly and disassembly. Thin hexagonal nuts have reduced thickness and are used where space is limited on connected machine parts.
Hexagonal nuts are classified by nominal thickness into Type I, Type II, and thin varieties. Grade 8 and above nuts are divided into Type I and Type II. The design of hexagonal nuts provides excellent torque transmission capacity and can withstand significant axial and radial loads.
Additional classifications include Type 1 (single chamfer), Type 3 (double chamfer), pocket nuts for decorative use, and butterfly nuts for space-constrained applications like automobile wheels.
304 stainless steel (18/8 stainless steel) contains over 18% chromium and 8% nickel, with high temperature resistance up to 800°C. It offers good processing performance and high toughness, making it suitable for industrial, decorative, and food/medical applications. Food grade 304 has stricter content requirements than standard 304.
Bolt and nut strength levels typically match (e.g., 8.8 bolt with 8 nut), though in some cases nuts may be slightly lower strength for safety and cost considerations.
