Hexagonal nuts and screws, bolts, and screws are used in conjunction with each other to connect and fasten machine parts. The most widely used type is the six nuts, with C nuts used for surface roughness and applications where precision requirements of the machine, equipment or structure are not high. A and B nuts are used for more polished surfaces and applications with higher precision requirements.
Hexagonal nuts are classified by nominal thickness into Type I, Type II, and thin types. Type I hexagonal nuts are the most widely used, divided into A, B, and C grades. Type II hexagonal nuts are thicker and mostly used in applications requiring frequent assembly and disassembly.
The design of hexagonal nuts provides excellent torque transmission capacity and can withstand large axial and radial loads.
Hexagon nuts have various classifications and specifications to meet different engineering needs. Type 1 hexagon nuts have single-sided chamfers, while Type 3 have double-sided chamfers. Pocket nuts are used for decorative purposes, and butterfly nuts are used in space-limited applications.
For metric bolt grades (4.6, 4.8, 5.8, 6.8, 8.8, 9.8, 10.9, 12.9), the nut grade should match the bolt grade by removing the decimal (e.g., 8.8 bolt with 8 nut). In some cases, nuts may have slightly lower strength than bolts for safety and cost considerations.
