Why does galvanisation prevent rust? — A dual protective mechanism
Regardless of the process employed, rust prevention relies on two principles:
Sacrificial anode protection (core principle):
Zinc is more chemically reactive than iron (possesses a more negative electrode potential)
In damp or corrosive environments, zinc corrodes preferentially, acting like a "bodyguard" shielding steel from attack
Even if the coating is scratched, exposing the iron substrate, the surrounding zinc continues to shield it.
Physical Barrier Isolation:
A dense zinc layer blocks oxygen and moisture.
The white, compact product formed after zinc corrosion (basic zinc carbonate) automatically "seals" microscopic pores, preventing corrosion spread.
