Workers install these fasteners through roofing sheets or wall panels into underlying purlins or girts, with the hook end engaging the structural member from below or behind. In temporary construction applications, hook bolts enable rapid attachment and removal of formwork, scaffolding, safety netting, and bracing systems. High-strength steel (HSS) refers to a category of steel with a yield strength significantly higher than that of ordinary carbon structural steel (typically ≥355 MPa or 50 ksi). It achieves excellent comprehensive mechanical properties through processes such as alloying, heat treatment, or controlled rolling and cooling. Its key characteristics are as follows:
Outstanding Mechanical Properties
The most notable characteristic of high-strength steel is its exceptionally high strength. Its yield strength can be 2–4 times that of standard Q235 steel, with tensile strength typically exceeding 500 MPa; some ultra-high-strength steels even surpass 1,000 MPa. This strength advantage allows for a significant reduction in cross-sectional dimensions of components whilst meeting the same load-bearing requirements, thereby achieving structural lightweighting. For example, the use of high-strength steel in car bodies allows component thickness to be reduced from 2.0 mm to 1.2 mm, reducing the overall vehicle weight by 15%–20% whilst maintaining crash safety. Alongside this increase in strength, high-strength steel generally maintains a good yield-to-tensile strength ratio (0.85–0.95), ensuring the ability to provide early warning of plastic deformation.
Excellent strength-to-weight ratio
The core value of high-strength steel, which is irreplaceable in sectors such as aerospace, automotive and bridge construction, lies in its exceptional specific strength. For the same structural load-bearing capacity, the weight of high-strength steel components is significantly reduced, directly translating into improved fuel efficiency, lower transport costs or increased span capacity. The main cables and hangers of long-span cable-stayed bridges utilise high-strength steel wires (with a tensile strength of 1860 MPa), making spans of over a kilometre possible.
Good toughness and resistance to brittle fracture
Modern high-strength steel utilises microalloying (Nb, V, Ti) and TMCP (Thermomechanical Control Process) technologies to refine grain size whilst enhancing strength, thereby improving low-temperature toughness. Many high-strength steels retain good impact toughness at temperatures as low as -40°C or even -60°C, meeting the demands of harsh environments such as bridges in cold regions and offshore platforms. However, it should be noted that as the strength grade increases, the material’s susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement and stress corrosion cracking also increases, necessitating strict control of welding materials and processes.
