Copper is a transition metal with the chemical symbol Cu and atomic number 29. It is one of the earliest metals to have been used by humankind; as far back as prehistoric times, people began mining copper in open-cast mines and using the copper obtained to manufacture weapons, tools and other vessels.
Pure copper is a soft metal with a (purple) reddish colour. It possesses good ductility, thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity, and is therefore widely used in cables, electrical and electronic components, building materials and alloys.
Copper has relatively low metallic reactivity (reducing power); on the one hand, elemental iron can displace elemental copper from a solution of copper sulphate; on the other hand, elemental copper is insoluble in non-oxidising acids at room temperature.
Furthermore, copper is an essential trace element for human health, playing a vital role in the development and function of the blood, central nervous system and immune system, as well as in the development and function of hair, skin and bone tissue, and internal organs such as the brain, liver and heart.
