While Al 6061 is often the default choice for CNC machined aluminum parts, Al 5052 becomes the superior option when marine, saltwater, or coastal environments are involved. Al 5052-H32 offers approximately 20x the corrosion resistance of 6061 in saltwater environments due to its magnesium-based alloy composition and essentially zero copper content, which eliminates galvanic corrosion risks.
5052 machines differently than 6061 - slightly gummier with more tendency for built-up edge on tools, and it doesn't anodize as well. However, for parts exposed to salt spray for extended periods, the corrosion resistance trade-off is absolutely worthwhile. While 5052-H32 has about 30% lower yield strength than 6061-T6 (193 MPa vs 276 MPa), its strength remains perfectly adequate for most marine hardware applications.
Additionally, 5052 offers excellent formability with 12-18% elongation, making it ideal for designs combining CNC machining with bending operations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Al 5052 or Al 6061 for my marine bracket?
5052. No question. If your bracket will be anywhere near saltwater - even salt air - 5052's corrosion resistance is dramatically better. The only reason to use 6061 is if you need its higher strength AND you're willing to pay for proper anodizing plus a marine paint system.
Do I need to paint 5052 for marine use?
It depends on the exposure level. Above the waterline with occasional salt spray, bare 5052 often performs fine for years. Below the waterline or in continuous spray zones, add a marine paint system for long-term protection.
Can 5052 be anodized like 6061?
Yes, but Type II anodize on 5052 produces a grayish, less uniform finish compared to 6061. If cosmetic appearance matters, consider painting instead of anodizing.
What about using Al 5083 instead?
5083-H321 is about 40% stronger than 5052-H32 with similar corrosion resistance, but it's more expensive, harder to machine, and less formable. Use 5083 for structural load-bearing parts, 5052 for brackets and enclosures.
How do you handle galvanic corrosion with stainless steel fasteners?
Solutions include isolating washers (nylon or EPDM), anti-seize compound on threads, painted contact surfaces, or using aluminum fasteners. We can design isolation features into the part during DFM review.
What's the typical lead time for marine components?
3-7 days for prototypes, 7-15 days for production. Specialized marine coating or salt spray testing adds 3-5 days. 5052 material is usually in stock.
