The mechanical parts that we would like to talk about now are the automotive industry prototyping parts which are also called as automotive exteriors and interiors. Description:

Rapid prototyping of automotive industry exteriors and interiors can be achieved through rapid 3 axis CNC machining, 4 axis CNC machining and 5 axis CNC machining; there are also small volume requirement which is to meet the planning of show car models or testing purpose, this can be made by vacuum casting through silicone molds. For higher volume machining, there is Reaction injection molding which is seldom available in Southern China, but Kaiao is the one with such ability equipped.

1.  CNC machining for automotive exteriors and interiors

CNC is a fast machining method to get a sample or prototype to verify the design or testing. Most of the automotive exteriors and interiors will use ABS as the material, which is cheap and easy to machine. For the complicated structure, even use ABS can be split and glue together without breaking the strength of the parts. The longest part that we can machine is 1400*700*600mm which is normally the length of a car part. The post finishing that we offer for automotive parts is widely chosen and our experience in painting big parts is quite rich and professional.

2.  Low volume vacuum casting automotive prototyping

With the in house vacuum casting facility, Kaiao do a lot low volume automotive prototypes for our automotive clients. With this we will make a MASTER for the silicone mold first through CNC machining or 3D printing, when we get the master done as the same finish as the final products, we will start the silicone mold preparation. The longest length for our silicone mold is also 1400*700*600mm. One silicone mold for the large size parts can get about 10-12 pieces, smaller size parts can get 15-20 pieces, after vacuum casting, can start the post finishing process such as painting, plating or printing. It will be the same cosmetic as final products with good strength and longer life time. The vacuum casting urethane that we are using is noble Axson and Heicast even with anti-fire function and glass fiber filled as well.

3.  Reaction injection molding for higher volume automotive prototyping

Reaction injection molding, also known as RIM, is a unique production special for automotive exteriors such as car bumper, car doors with an even wall thickness from 3mm-10mm, the maximum weight can be 10KG for a part. With RIM, we have ABS mold, aluminum mold, ABS mold can get about 300 pieces, for aluminum mold, can get more than 1000 pieces. This is a much cheaper method to make higher volume automotive parts compared to the traditional injection molding which normally have super high tooling cost for larger parts.

The RIM technology that Kaiao’s been investigating in these years has already improve the shortcomings of bubbles during the injection, with such improvement we decrease the discard costs and then can offer a better price to our clients.
