Rotation-resistant wire rope (also known as non-rotating or low-rotation rope) features a specialized construction designed to minimize torque, twisting, and load rotation when under tension. Unlike conventional single-lay wire ropes—which generate significant rotational force when bearing a load—this type of rope utilizes a multi-layer, counter-lay strand configuration to counteract internal torsional forces. As a critical lifting component in modern cranes, hoisting equipment, and precision engineering, it effectively mitigates safety issues such as load rotation, rope kinking, and reduced service life caused by rope twisting.
1. Working Principle and Core Structure
The rotation-resistant performance of this wire rope stems from its torque-balanced structural design. Traditional wire ropes consist of strands laid in a single direction, generating continuous rotational torque under tension; in contrast, rotation-resistant ropes employ a multi-layer composite lay structure. The helical lay direction of the inner strands opposes that of the outer strands; consequently, the torque generated by the inner layers under load is fully or partially offset by the counter-torque of the outer layers, achieving a state of near "torque neutrality" during operation.
This design departs from the traditional single-layer strand arrangement. The number of strand layers and the quantity of outer strands directly determine the rope's rotation-resistance grade. The inner core supports the overall structure, while the counter-laid outer strands bear the primary load. During manufacturing, the lay length and strand tension are precisely matched to ensure uniform load distribution across all layers, thereby preventing localized stress concentration and core slippage.
2. Industrial Classification and Common Specifications
According to international industry standards and structural characteristics, rotation-resistant wire ropes are divided into multiple grades, with clear differences in anti-rotation performance, structural stability and application scenarios:
Class I (High Rotation Resistance)
It has no less than three strand layers and more than 15 outer strands, with extremely low torque and almost no rotation under load. It features the highest structural stability, suitable for high-precision and high-risk lifting scenarios, and can be used with swivels. Typical specifications include 35×7 and 32×7, which are the most reliable anti-rotation rope types for heavy-duty engineering.
Class II (Medium Rotation Resistance)
Double-layer strand structure with 11–13 outer strands, balanced torsion and moderate anti-rotation performance. It balances cost and performance, and is widely used in conventional crane hoisting operations. The classic 19×7 specification belongs to this category, which is the most mainstream general-purpose rotation-resistant wire rope.
Class III (Basic Rotation Resistance)
Double-layer structure with 8–10 outer strands, limited anti-rotation capability and relatively obvious residual torque. It is lightweight and cost-effective, suitable for light-load and short-distance lifting scenarios. Swivels are not recommended for matching use to avoid aggravating structural deformation. Common specifications include 8×19 and 9×7 series.
