The steel pilot wire used for conductor stringing is a high-strength, anti-twist wire rope specifically designed for the construction of overhead transmission and distribution lines. Serving as a critical intermediate pulling medium, it enables the safe and efficient pulling of heavy conductors, OPGW, ADSS fiber optic cables, and ground wires across tower spans.
Definition: A wire rope (typically hot-dip galvanized) manufactured using a special braiding process; it features an anti-rotation structural design that eliminates twisting under load.
Core Function: Acts as a "pilot wire" in multi-stage stringing operations. It is first strung across the span and subsequently used to pull a heavier pulling rope, which in turn pulls the final conductor. This staged approach ensures safety and controllability during heavy-load pulling operations.
The most common design is an anti-twist braided rope with a symmetrical cross-section, utilizing a combination of left-hand and right-hand lay strands to counteract torque.
