1. Introduction

• What is tinplate? 

• Tinned steel sheet referred to as tinplate, commonly known as tinplate, is a product made of tinning on a thin mild steel plate. The tin plate produced by the hot dip process is called the hot dip tin plate, and the tin plate produced by the electroplating process is called the electroplated tin plate.

• Because about 98~99.8% of the weight of the tin plate is steel, it is a coated steel variety that belongs to metallurgical products.

1. Food and Beverage Cans:

- Grade Requirements: Tinplate used for food cans must have a thin, uniform tin coating that provides excellent corrosion resistance. The surface finish should be smooth to avoid any contamination of the contents, and the material must be resistant to acids, alkalines, and moisture.

- Material Properties: For deep drawing and stamping, food can grades of tinplate are typically made from low-carbon steel, which offers high formability. The material must also meet food safety standards, ensuring that there are no harmful reactions between the tinplate and the food inside the can.

- Typical Grades: Common grades used in food canning are T1 and T2 tinplate, which are characterized by high ductility and low carbon content.

2. Aerosol and Beverage Cans:

- Grade Requirements: Tinplate used for beverage and aerosol cans must have high strength and be able to withstand internal pressure without deforming. It must also be resistant to corrosion and rust in environments containing liquids and gases.

- Material Properties: This grade of tinplate must possess excellent formability for deep drawing processes to create the cylindrical shape of cans. The tin coating must be uniform and sufficiently thick to provide a barrier to corrosion.
