Pullulan is an extracellular water-soluble viscous polysaccharide, similar to glucan and xanthan gum, produced by the fermentation of Aureobasidium pullulans. It was discovered as a unique microbial polysaccharide in 1938.
Applications of Pullulan in Industry
1. Eco-Friendly Packaging Materials and Wastewater Treatment
Pullulan exhibits excellent film-forming and fiber-forming properties, making it suitable for producing plant fiber-free paper with high water absorbency, ideal for writing and printing. It serves as an excellent packaging material and, when combined with specific additives, can be used to manufacture high-grade specialty papers and packaging films. As a flocculant, pullulan's unique adsorption and electrochemical characteristics enable molecular bridging, adsorption, flocculation, and sedimentation with the aid of coagulants. These properties make it effective for purifying drinking water and domestic/industrial wastewater, removing suspended solids, BOD, COD, and decolorizing odors. Huazhong University of Science and Technology has applied this product in high-concentration water purification, primary enhanced treatment of municipal wastewater, and monosodium glutamate production wastewater treatment. This has resulted in a complete technological process with a dosage of 2 mg/L, achieving significant effectiveness.
2. Adhesives, Coagulants, and Protective Coatings
Pullulan dissolves completely at any temperature without crystallizing upon drying. As a remoistenable adhesive, it enables bonding and coagulation without the need for chemical solvents. Additionally, it does not generate high temperatures or harmful gases during combustion. When used in sand molds for bonding, it eliminates gas, dust, noise, and vibration during casting. Fertilizer granules bonded with pullulan exhibit slow-release characteristics, improving fertilizer utilization efficiency. As a protective coating for lithographic printing plates, it not only enhances oxidation resistance but also increases the hydrophilicity of non-image area metal surfaces, resulting in clearer images. Its adhesive and antioxidant properties are also utilized in agricultural seed protection and the tobacco industry, particularly in the latter.
