A lotion pump is a marvel of simple engineering. It operates on a vacuum and pressure principle:
Priming: The first few pumps remove air from the dip tube and pump chamber.
Activation: When you press down on the actuator (the head), it pushes a piston down, forcing the liquid out through the orifice.
Suction: When you release the actuator, a spring returns it to the up position. This creates a vacuum that draws more liquid up the dip tube from the bottle into the pump chamber, ready for the next use.
