Multimode fiber
Multimode fibers are typically 50 and 62.5 microns in diameter, and there is no difference in speed between them. The multimode fiber has wavelength ranges of 850 nm and 1300 nm. The 850 nm wavelength light is visible and harmless to the human eye. The 1300 nm wavelength is invisible and harmful to the retina. There are many types of connectors at both ends of a multimode fiber, including SC, LC, and MT-RJ. Multimode fiber uses a clustered LED instead of a real laser.
Single mode fiber
Single-mode fiber is suitable for long-distance signal transmission. Its wavelength is 1300 nm, which is invisible and harmful to human eyes. The single-mode fiber has a diameter of 9 μm. Because of its small diameter, when it is used to transmit signals over long distances, the light wave is not easily changed. So in a long-distance SAN, single-mode fiber is the best solution. Since the diameter of a single-mode fiber is very small, its potential emission speed is also the highest, the theoretical limit speed is 25 Tb/s, and the theoretical limit speed of a multi-mode fiber is 10 Gb/s.
Single-mode fiber itself is not much more expensive than multi-mode fiber or copper wire. The price increase is mainly due to its transceiver components because it uses a laser rather than an LED. Due to the very small diameter of the single mode fiber, the accuracy of the fiber optic transceiver is very demanding.
ST, SC connector connectors are commonly used in general networks. After inserting the ST head, there is a fixed bayonet after half a rotation.
