Product Overview

The Yaskawa GA50U4007ABA is a 480 V class GA500 variable frequency drive intended for three-phase industrial motor-control applications. Its Normal Duty rating is 4 HP or 3 kW with 7.1 A output current. Under Heavy Duty selection, the applicable rating becomes 3 HP or 2.2 kW with 5.6 A output current.

This distinction makes GA50U4007ABA suitable for either a moderate-overload 4 HP application or a more demanding 3 HP application. It should not automatically be treated as a universal 4 HP drive because the correct usable rating depends on starting torque, acceleration frequency, load variation and required overload performance.

Model-Specific Rating and Selection

GA50U4007ABA is positioned between GA50U4005ABA and GA50U4009ABA in the GA500 480 V range. Compared with GA50U4005ABA, it increases Normal Duty current from 5.4 A to 7.1 A and Heavy Duty current from 4.8 A to 5.6 A. The additional current capacity is useful for motors whose nameplate current or acceleration demand exceeds the lower model.

Normal Duty selection is generally appropriate for variable-torque and moderate-overload equipment. Heavy Duty should be evaluated for conveyors, mixers and machines that experience higher starting torque or frequent speed changes. Use the motor nameplate current rather than nominal horsepower as the primary electrical selection reference.

Motor Control Technology

The GA500 platform provides V/f control and open-loop vector control for induction motors, as well as control capability for compatible permanent-magnet motors. Open-loop vector control offers improved torque production and speed regulation where accurate motor data and appropriate tuning have been entered.

Motor parameters must match the connected machine. Incorrect current, frequency, speed or pole data can reduce performance or cause nuisance faults. Autotuning should be completed according to the selected control method, with the driven equipment secured and the consequences of shaft rotation evaluated before testing.

Control, Safety and Communication

Configurable inputs and outputs allow the drive to accept run direction, external fault, multi-step speed and analog speed-reference commands while returning operating or fault status to a controller. Embedded RS-485 supports MEMOBUS/Modbus RTU communication. EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, EtherCAT and other industrial networks require suitable GA500 option hardware.

The Safe Torque Off circuit can be incorporated into a properly designed machine safety system and is rated SIL3 under IEC 62061 and PLe under ISO 13849-1. STO prevents torque-producing operation but does not remove hazardous electrical voltage from the drive terminals.

Application Engineering

GA50U4007ABA can be applied to conveyors, pumps, fans, packaging systems, material-handling equipment, process machinery and other adjustable-speed applications. For pumps and fans, verify minimum permissible operating speed and system pressure requirements. For conveyors, confirm breakaway torque, loaded starting conditions and emergency stopping behavior.

Rapid deceleration can return energy to the DC bus. The built-in braking transistor supports an external braking resistor, but resistor value and thermal capacity must be calculated for the actual braking cycle. It must not be selected only from the motor horsepower.

Installation and Commissioning Notes

The IP20 chassis must be installed inside a suitable enclosure with adequate heat dissipation. Check ambient conditions, mounting spacing, altitude, carrier frequency and expected continuous load. Apply proper cable routing and grounding to reduce electrical noise affecting encoders, analog signals and communication networks.
