Product Overview

The Yaskawa GA50U4031ABA is a GA500 industrial variable frequency drive designed for 380 to 480 VAC three-phase motor systems. Its Normal Duty rating is 20 HP or 15 kW with 31.0 A output current. Under Heavy Duty selection, the applicable rating is 15 HP or 11 kW with 24.0 A output current.

This model covers a higher-current section of the GA500 range and requires careful coordination with the motor, supply system, cabinet cooling and driven load. The 20 HP rating applies to Normal Duty operation and must not be used for a high-overload application without reviewing the lower Heavy Duty limit.

Model-Specific Rating and Selection

For pumps and fans with moderate overload demand, the 31 A Normal Duty rating may be appropriate. Conveyors, loaded mixers, process machinery and high-inertia equipment should be evaluated against the 24 A Heavy Duty rating. Starting conditions and acceleration frequency can be more important than nominal motor power.

Check motor full-load current, efficiency, service factor, base frequency and expected torque throughout the speed range. When current demand approaches the rating limit, the next drive size may provide more reliable operating margin.

Motor Control Technology

The GA500 platform supports V/f control and open-loop vector control for induction motors together with compatible permanent-magnet motor operation. Open-loop vector control can improve torque response and speed regulation where correct motor data and tuning are available.

Commissioning must include the actual motor voltage, current, frequency, speed and power. Autotuning requirements vary according to the motor and control mode. The machine must be secured before rotational tuning, and coupling or gearbox limitations must be considered.

Control, Safety and Communication

Programmable digital and analog I/O support run commands, speed reference, external faults, status feedback and process interlocks. Embedded RS-485 communication supports MEMOBUS/Modbus RTU. EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, PROFIBUS-DP, EtherCAT and other networks require compatible optional equipment.

GA500 Safe Torque Off is rated SIL3 under IEC 62061 and PLe under ISO 13849-1 when correctly integrated into a validated safety system. STO prevents motor torque but does not disconnect the supply or eliminate hazardous terminal voltage.

Application Engineering

GA50U4031ABA is suitable for larger pumps, fans, conveyors, material-handling equipment, packaging lines and process machinery. Review motor current, starting torque, load inertia, operating speed, acceleration time and regenerative stopping energy.

The built-in braking transistor allows use of an external braking resistor. The resistor is a separate component and must be engineered for resistance, peak braking energy, average thermal load and operating duty.

Installation and Commissioning Notes

Install the IP20 drive inside a ventilated electrical cabinet. At 31 A output, conductor sizing, protective devices, grounding, terminal tightening and heat dissipation require particular attention. Separate motor conductors from low-level control and network wiring.

Review derating requirements for ambient temperature, altitude, carrier frequency and mounting arrangement. Confirm motor rotation, protection settings, frequency limits, safety inputs and controller communication before production.
