A diesel fuel boost pump (feed pump or lift pump) is a low-pressure fuel pump whose primary function is to transfer diesel fuel from the fuel tank to the high-pressure injection pump (or common rail system), ensuring sufficient fuel supply to the high-pressure pump and maintaining normal engine operation.
Function
Fuel delivery: Transfers diesel fuel from the fuel tank to the high-pressure pump or injection system.
Boosting: Provides a certain low-pressure fuel pressure to prevent cavitation or air ingress in the high-pressure pump.
Filtration protection: Typically used with a prefilter to prevent impurities from entering the fuel system.
Lubrication of the high-pressure pump: In mechanical high-pressure pumps, the fuel from the boost pump also serves as a lubricant.
