Ultrasonic Technology:
The scalpel uses ultrasonic vibrations, typically at frequencies around 55.5 kHz. These high-frequency
vibrations convert electrical energy into mechanical energy at the active blade.
The active blade vibrates at ultrasonic frequencies, which causes friction, leading to high temperatures
at the tissue interface.
Precise Dissection & Hemostasis:
As it cuts through tissue, the scalpel can simultaneously coagulate blood vessels, reducing bleeding and
the need for additional hemostatic agents.
The inactive upper arm helps hold the tissue in place while the active blade performs the cutting, leading

traditional cauterizing tools which can cause burns or charring.
This makes the Harmonic scalpel ideal for delicate or complex surgeries where precision is critical.

The device’s ability to cut and coagulate with minimal lateral thermal damage lowers the risk of thermal
injury to adjacent structures. This is particularly important in surgeries involving nerves, vessels, or
organs.
Tissue Sealing:
The ultrasonic vibrations create enough heat to denature protein bonds within tissues. This denaturation
leads to the formation of a coagulum, which effectively seals vessels and helps in vessel coagulation
during surgery.
Efficiency:
The Harmonic scalpel can reduce surgical time, as it combines cutting and coagulation in one instrument. Surgeons can perform precise incisions without needing to switch instruments, leading to faster
procedures and recovery times.
